In a victory for transparency local authorities in Britain will be forced to reveal figures about speed cameras in their areas. The figures will show how many fines each camera has given out along with the total amount of revenue accumulated from fines. By July 20th, they must release information on the number of accidents and casualties at camera sites, both before and after the installation of CCTV.
There are over 6,000 speed cameras in Britain, raising a staggering £100,000,000 per year in fines. It is hoped the release of this information will put pressure on local authorities to dismantle ineffective cameras, or those that do not improve safety in the local area.
Road safety minister Mike Penning said:
“We want to stop motorists being used as cash cows. For too long information about speed cameras has been hidden in the shadows. This data will end that by clearly showing whether a camera is saving lives or just making money.”
We expect this information will contain some very shocking figures which will indicate a habit of installing speed cameras in areas where they will make the most money in fines. Approximately 28,000 accidents have occurred since 2001 due to speed cameras causing motorists to drive erratically, brake suddenly or take their eyes off the road.
