Sainsbury's introduces scheme to look out for unusual purchasing patterns
Sainsbury’s are trialling a strange new method of training for their staff to spot odd patterns of shopping. The scheme comes with government backing and is designed to determine if shoppers are carers who do not realise they are entitled to financial support from the state. Some critics have called it state-sponsored spying into people’s private lives. Staff will be taught to look out for unusual shopping habits which indicate the purchasing of food for a dependent, such as using two baskets and paying for them separately. Customers picking up prescriptions for others will also be quizzed on their situation....

Daniel Hamilton and Alex Deane: Control orders are an affront to justice
Facebook being "just that, a social network" is all well and good, but I am not a member and I have had my picture uploaded by others who have taken my picture without my knowledge and uploaded it to F.B. without my consent. They have removed these pictures when I have found out, but what about the ones I don't know about? I can't opt out of something I am not a part of and have no knowledge about either!

A recent survey of some of the most popular websites on the internet has revealed that 75% of them leak personal information or identifying data to third-party tracking sites. The study was performed by university researchers, including Balachander Krishnamurthy of AT&T Labs, and Konstantin Naryshkin and Craig E Wills of Worchester Polytechnic Institute. Their report was presented at the Web 2.0 conference in California last month.

Daniel Hamilton, Director of Big Brother Watch - a civil liberties and privacy campaign group - said: “While nobody wants to hear foul language while they’re walking down the street, this proposal goes a step too far. Intimidating behaviour should of course be punished, but it’s important to keep things in proportion.
