Over at Politics.co.uk, there's an interesting article from Ian Dunt which alleges that the "complacency of civil liberties campaigners means the only pressure the government gets is from the securocrats and tabloids".
In particular, he is critical of groups such as Big Brother Watch for remaining "entirely silent" on the recent Freedom Bill and failing "credit where it's due".
At Big Brother Watch, we simply do not agree that this was the case.
The government's Freedom Bill was, of course, a step in the right direction - particularly in relation to removing innocent people from the national DNA database and striping councils of their "grim RIPA" powers to barge into private homes unannounced.
So, while we are happy to - to quote Mr Dunt - "give credit where credit's due", we simply do not feel the bill went far enough. As a campaign group dedicated to fighting intrusions on privacy and protecting liberties, it is only natural that we would seek to continue putting pressure on the government on issues such as ending detention without charge and random stop and search powers.
You can view the full article, which is well worth reading, here. What do you think?
Remaining silent on the Freedom Bill?!
