Department for Work and Pensions to introduce identity verification service
Details have emerged of a £2 million Department of Work and Pensions tender to find a company able to source biographical and other background information about online benefit claimants. Crucially, the "chosen supplier will provide biographical data to supplement information already available to the department", indicating that such a supplier would not simply be linking up existing databases in the pursuit of so-called "joined up government". The full piece can be found on the excellent Register website. A Big Brother Watch co-conspiritor added: "Isn't it good to see that our freedom-loving government have thrown out those plans for keeping giant...

India pushes to monitor emails on Blackberry devices
The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that India and Research In Motion (RIM), the maker of BlackBerry, are at odds over the ability for India to access corporate emails on all BlackBerry devices. RIM has given India access to the messenger service on BlackBerry, but says it is technical impossible to do so for emails. India’s push for access to wireless communications is based on fears that heavy encryption on smart phones would allow for terrorists to use them undetected. Daniel Hamilton and Alex Deane: Control orders are an affront to justice
This is just the tip of the iceberg unfortunately. Staff in the NHS (at all levels), in banks, in local government and in many more organisations are not trained properly in their obligations under the data protection act. They are not data aware and do not see any significance in their sharing data without the knowledge or consent of the person or people concerned. Time and time again I have experienced data breaches and now I do all that I can to remove data from organisaations and where possible I do not provide data - people view me as strange when I refuse to give eg my date of birth or other data but the only way you can be sure they are not wrongly processing your data is not to provide it in the first place (and hope that someone else hasn't given it out without your knowledge and consent).
I feel for the people whose data has been breached in this example, it is like data rape when it happens to you. No apology can make up for this type of breach.

Patty Bogle and her late husband, Chris, built Bogle Vineyards from 18 acres of grapes into one of the best inexpensive wine producers in the world. The company ships more than 1.2 million cases of wine annually, and Wine Business Monthly ranked Bogle as the country's 14th-largest winery.
