A formal end to ID Cards

A good day. The ID card scheme’s demise is one in the eye for the authoritarian busybodies. Nobody wanted them and they were an intrusive waste of money.

Now, along with our friends at No2ID and the like, we must ensure that the bureaucrats don’t continue with the construction of a database state bit by bit – because ID cards were just the most visible part of a whole scheme of nosiness, much of which is still with us.

(As posted on the Schadenfreude thread earlier.) There's another side to this, of course, namely how burdensome are the cancellation charges and how far the government will tell the contractors to take a long walk off a short plank. Freedom of Information issues, anyone?

Havant leads the way... ... by removing useless CCTV cameras: The good news: (1) Of the 76 cameras covering the town, 32 have been switched off following a review into the system. (2) The council's safety officer says the new system will save the council £80,000 a year following the removal of cameras that did not pick up enough crimes to justify the annual £3,000 maintenance costs. Useful, too, to have the maintenance figure - £3k per camera!! But, on the other hand, the bad news: (3) remaining cameras have been updated to a digital system at a cost of £200,000 Still, at least...
